We all like to have a technique that is quick, easy and impressive – and this is one of my favourites. It’s always a hit with my classes. It is a simple, easy block stamping technique that absolutely anyone can do.
In this post I will show you not only how to do the background block stamping technique, but how to play about with the colour a little to achieve your desired result. And I’ve included some links to similar techniques, further down the post, so be sure to check them out.
Easy Block Stamping
I always tell my classmates not to be afraid of using water and inks as they are very forgiving in this block stamping technique. Simply make sure to have a piece of kitchen roll to hand and any disasters can be avoided. π
Another little tip: – to get extra depth of colour simply leave the inked up block sitting on top of the watercolour paper for approximately 5 minutes. Put a little weight on top of it whilst you’re waiting. And don’t leave it for longer than 5 minutes otherwise it may just become a muddy mess.
I’ve a short video tutorial below just to illustrate how easy it is. So get those markers out and start having fun!
For this block stamping technique, I’ve used shades slightly darker than I would normally use as the water will dilute the shade slightly.
If you’re a little hesitant about which colours to use then simply start with lighter shades. You can always add deeper shades using the repeat block stamping technique that I’ve used.
And if you like to experiment then try working with different colours.Β I’ve so many plans for this stamp set so you can just bet that I’m going to be experimenting with loads of different colour and techniques.
I’ve added a handy product list below to let you know what I used on this project. In relation to the background (only) then the first 6 products are what I used.

Beautiful cards, Lilian. I do love me a seaside card – I grew up within earshot of the sea and miss it still. I’ve never tried this with markers, just inks. I must give it a go!
Hi Sabrina. So lovely to hear from you and thank you for your lovely feedback. I’m delighted you liked the cards. I too grew up close to the sea and thankfully I still don’t live too far from it so can visit when I get the chance. I hope you’re keeping well and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. xx
